In search of new modes of communication and expres

In search of new modes of communication and expression, pianist @escforescent explores performance as an immersive and integrated experience, reimagining the ways in which we listen and think about music. Through the cross-pollination of music with olfaction, dance and movement, science, visual art, architecture, technology, and beyond, Snyder seeks to illuminate entirely new perspectives borne out of experimentation.

Driven a great deal by collaboration, Snyder has joined forces with artists spanning a wide spectrum of backgrounds, from choreographers, poets, and digital artists to perfumers, durational performance artists, fashion designers, and laser artists. With a focus on the music of living composers, he has had the great privilege of working with Libby Larsen, Molly Joyce, My Brightest Diamond (Shara Nova), Kelly Moran, Jonathan Dove, Evan Ziporyn, William Bolcom, and Jake Heggie, amongst many more artists.

Snyder is the creative director of New Music Detroit, a collective of musicians dedicated to performing groundbreaking musical works from the late-20th century to the present day.

Tickets to the 2024 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival will go on sale March 25th! In the meantime, here is a look at our opening night concert:

Opening Night: The Creative Essence will feature a star-studded combo of world-renowned musicians and a spectacular local ensemble! Violinist and @detchamberwinds will perform works by Wagner, Britten, and Bartók.

Ordinarily revered for his phenomenal cello playing, Festival Director Paul Watkins takes the podium to conduct Wagner's Siegfried Idyll and Bartók's Violin Concerto

No. 2. This year's Festival theme is Creative Connections, and this unique concert will be sure to spark new emotions in all concertgoers!

Upcoming Vignette pianist, @shaiwosner, has been a friend of the Festival for years.

During our virtual Festival in 2020, Wosner performed in a virtual concert alongside Tessa Lark and Paul Watkins. This beautiful performance was created for digital viewing and still lives on our website and YouTube channels for all to watch.

With the combination of Wosner's extraordinary playing and the intimate experience of watching a Chamber music performance inside a beautiful home, our Vignette Series delivers a unique chamber music experience. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided!

A note from Paul Watkins, our Festival Artistic Director:

Collaboration is the essence of chamber music and has been at the center of my musical life since I was a child, reading sonatas and four-hand music with my parents and brother at our home in Wales. In this year’s Festival, which we have called “Creative Connections,” I wanted to explore the myriad different ways in which musicians collaborate, influence and inspire each other.

In a Festival that spans works from Bach to the present day, we will hear how composers and performers have reached across generations and even centuries to fuel and enrich their creativity.

For this Festival, my tenth as Artistic Director, I have been influenced more than ever by suggestions from our extraordinary roster of artists. Every one of these outstanding musicians has contributed personally to the programming you will experience over the next two weeks. I am deeply grateful for the way their inventive and sometimes unexpected ideas have made these concerts into such a rich and diverse mix of genres, challenging me to create a menu of music that is perhaps bolder and more contrasting than ever before.

I can truly say that being connected with the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival for the last 10 years has been a life-changing experience. It continues to be my privilege and joy to bring great music to you.

The Festival is dedicated to advancing chamber mus

The Festival is dedicated to advancing chamber music through commissions. This year, we are premiering a work by @kyle_rivera, which we co-commissioned with Chamber Music Northwest and the Seattle Chamber Music Society.

The ever-evolving artistic perspective of Kyle Rivera (b. 1996) makes his music a space for intrigue and exploration. Rivera is fascinated by visual imagery in sound and the way it can create windows into his mind. He often draws upon the diverse sonic and cultural environments he grew up in to craft the soundscapes of his music.

Linguistics, spirituality, and media all influence the way Rivera creates music. One of Rivera’s goals as an artist is to offer a perspective on the world through his personal experiences. Some of his music has focused on topics relating to social justice, equality, and racialized matters. Alongside that, his music explores the conceptual limits of psychology, spirituality, and consciousness in sound.

As a composer, his music has been performed across the United States and internationally in Russia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and China. Kyle was the 2023 Anne Spencer Fellow with the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He received a 2024 MacDowell Fellowship and an Aaron Copland House Residency.

Recently, Rivera received the "Best New Commission of the Year" award from the Chamber Music America Conference. We couldn't be more excited to host him at this year's Festival!
