This week, we’re highlighting one of the most dynamic ensembles to ever graduate from our Shouse Institute: the @jupiter_quartet.

Founded in 2001, the Jupiter String Quartet is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (Meg’s older sister), and cellist Daniel McDonough (Meg’s husband, Liz’s brother-in-law). The New Yorker states, “The Jupiter String Quartet, an ensemble of eloquent intensity, has matured into one of the mainstays of the American chamber-music scene.”

The quartet has performed across some of the world’s finest halls, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, and Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall. The group also has dozens of major music festival appearances.

Their chamber music honors and awards include the grand prizes in the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2004. They won the Young Concert Artists International auditions in New York City in 2005, the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America in 2007, and received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008.

The Jupiter String Quartet feels a strong connection to the core string quartet repertoire; they have presented the complete Bartok string quartets and the complete cycle of Beethoven string quartets. Also deeply committed to new music, they have commissioned numerous string quartets from living composers..

The quartet's latest album is a collaboration with the Jasper String Quartet (another Shouse Institute alumni ensemble!), produced by Grammy Award-winner Judith Sherman. The Arts Fuse acclaimed, “This joint album from the Jupiter String Quartet and Jasper String Quartet is striking for its backstory but really memorable for its smart program and fine execution.”

Applications for our Shouse Institute are open for ONE MORE WEEK! Our intensive 2-week coaching and performing experience provides a world-class opportunity for the finest emerging, professional chamber ensembles. Located in Southeast Michigan, the festival platforms distinguished artists and programming that ranges from standard repertoire to cutting-edge, new works.

Participating ensembles are given multiple performance opportunities at Festival concerts and enjoy intensive coachings with some of the world’s most renowned chamber musicians. Listen as Paul Watkins breaks down his first concert playing with the Emerson String Quartet in 2013. The ensemble chose to play Schubert’s Cello Quintet, which allowed Watkins to play as the second cellist alongside the four original quartet members. What an introduction!

Applications to our Shouse Institute for emerging

Applications to our Shouse Institute for emerging ensembles are open for two more weeks! This week, we’re highlighting an up-and-coming Shouse ensemble: @vianoquartet.

Praised for their “virtuosity, visceral expression, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe), the Viano Quartet are one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and currently in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe.

The quartet was named the inaugural June Goldsmith Quartet-in-Residence for the Music in the Morning series in Vancouver until 2025, where their focus will be to commission new works and lead extensive community engagement initiatives. The quartet has also held residencies at the Curtis Institute, Colburn Conservatory, Northern Michigan University, and Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University.

The quartet achieved incredible success in their formative years, with an unbroken streak of top prizes at major competitions. In addition to their career-defining achievement at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they also received the Grand Prize at the 2019 ENKOR International Music Competition, second prize at the 2019 Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition and many more top three prizes as international competitions.

The name “Viano” was created to describe the four individual instruments in a string quartet interacting as one. Each of the four instruments begins with the letter “v”, and like a piano, all four string instruments together play both harmony and melody, creating a unified instrument called the “Viano.”

Applications to our Shouse Institute for emerging ensembles are still open! Many of our Shouse ensembles have gone on to have incredible careers after their experience at the Festival. Today, we’re highlighting our 2011/2012 Shouse group, Attacca Quartet.

Grammy award-winning Attacca Quartet, as described by The Nation, “lives in the present aesthetically, without rejecting the virtues of the musical past.” Acclaimed for their mature interpretive ability, the ensemble was formed at Juilliard in the mid-2000s.

Touring extensively across the world, the ensemble has performed at numerous festivals and a myriad of world-leading venues. Attacca Quartet has also served as the Quartet in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Ensemble-in-Residence at Texas State University and Juilliard's Graduate Resident String Quartet, where they will premiere their new film Plan and Elevation (featuring the music of the same name by Caroline Shaw) this year.

Passionate advocates of contemporary repertoire, the Quartet is dedicated to presenting and recording new works. They received the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for their recording project, Orange. Greatly received and praised by the critics, it has also been featured in NPR´s List of ‘25 Best Albums of 2019,’ ‘10 Classical Albums to Usher in the Next Decade’ and in New York Times’ list of the ‘25 Best Classical Music Tracks of 2019’ for Valencia.
