VISIONS AND REVISIONS
A NOTE FROM PAUL WATKINS, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
In imagining our 27th season, I was inspired by a T.S. Eliot poem, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” I gave particular attention to these lines:
Time for you and time for me
And time yet for a hundred indecisions
And for a hundred visions and revisions
Before the taking of a toast and tea.
Over our 26-year evolution, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival has always celebrated the past by pushing toward the future. I hope that is evident in this year’s programming, where we explore how the work of old masters inspires future generations of performers and composers.
Just as we look back for inspiration, we look forward with creativity. In support of great music, this year’s Festival presents a new visual image that recognizes our successes while embracing our future. Our logo has evolved, and we are celebrating our vibrant city by featuring the work of a beloved Detroit visual artist, Allie McGhee.
In his piece on our cover, called “Ring a Ding,” McGhee contemplates the ellipse of human evolution, and – in his way – explores how symbols draw us into art and move us along. It’s the same path for music, a journey that will inspire our performers, and hopefully our audiences, in 2020.
Together we’ll share great concerts and hopefully in the end, take our toast and tea.
With the 2020 Festival postponed by COVID-19, the “Visions & Revisions” theme of the 2020 Festival, encompassing artists and repertoire, is now planned to form the basis for the June 2021 Festival
